Bangalore, Aug 13 DHNS:
India’s accomplishments in the information technology and aerospace sectors may have won laurels from the world at large, but Governor H R Bhardwaj thinks these are ''negligible efforts'' compared to the country’s ''awfully poor'' performance in education and rural healthcare.
“It’s true that we have made rapid strides in these fields, but we still lag way behind in crucial areas of education and healthcare in rural areas. Our technological advancements are humble and we still cannot compete with the developed world in numerous other fields,” he said addressing the valedictory function of the two-day national seminar on "Social work practice towards ethical social responsibility in the era of global diversity and equity - a challenge or opportunity?" here on Friday.
The seminar was organised by the Karnataka Association of Professional Social Workers (KAPSW) and the Department of Social Work, Bangalore University.
According to the former Union Law Minister, the country’s achievements were more in quantity but very less in quality. “In villages, education is meted out a step-motherly treatment. Unless this is not rectified, our achievements will not be inclusive,” he observed.
The Governor, known for his sharp criticism of illegal mining and the clout of Reddy brothers in the State politics, also denigrated the corporate houses and took them to task for their “indifference” towards social responsibility.
